Mullroy swallowed, eyes darting around nervously as he was lead into Beckett's office. He could almost hear the funeral march playing in the back of his head, because, whatever happened in this office, it wasn't going to be pretty at all. No, no, not at all. He almost regretted speaking out against Mercer's harsh treatment of Murtogg....almost. He stood up a little straighter.

((Thank you for the proddage. o-o And if I remember correctly, Murtogg was still at the docks, I think...))

Murtogg continued to stand upright but, after trying to think of practically anything at all besides his good friend, he found he couldn't keep his mind off poor Mullroy. He was being taken to Beckett's office, for goodness sake! Nothing good could come from there...

He looked over to his partner, who was silent as usual, and pleaded to him, "I'm going to...take care of something. Please don't tell anybody...I'll be back!" And with that, he was off towards the direction the others had gone.

The quiet man just stood there after nodding.

Incompetance. It seemed he couldn't escape it.

Normally, any soldier showing such blatant disrespect would be made a clear example of, to discourage the others from getting any ideas. One had to hold the reins tightly, with this lot, or all could very well be lost.

The English Lord had settled himself imperiously behind his desk, his cold gaze shifting over the various documents that had been delivered in his absence, neatly tucking them away for later inspection. Everything had its place in the world...he couldn't abide anything remotely chaotic or unpredictable, and kept his office appropriately immaculate.

Ah, but desk-straightening aside...

At last he deemed the officer worthy of his attention, lifting his gaze to Mullroy. "Now, I realize you were not necessarily hired for your thinking capacity, Mister Mullroy, but I wonder if you can tell me why, precisely, it is that you are here."

Mullroy swallowed nervously, trying not to shake under Beckett's cold stare.

"W-w-well, y'see sir," he swallowed again in an attempt to stop his stuttering. "You see, sir, I was just guarding the docks, like I was ordered, and Miss Estrella, here, she tripped, see? So I stepped out of line for a moment to catch the lady and set her back on her feet 'cause I figured it was the proper thing to do. So then she thanked me good and proper and left, but before I could step back into line, see, the other man got angry with me for stepping out of line and so he hoisted me up off my feet, and that's when you came, sir, and--" he snapped his mouth shut when he realized he was rambling. "And that's all, sir."

"That's all, is it?"

One could mistake Beckett's tone for light and pleasant...almost patronizing. Of course, you'd have to be fairly innocent of what the man was capable of to think so.

"You believe that's all there was to the incident...that there is no further reason why I had you come here. Is that correct, Mister Mullroy?" he continued in that same airy tone, brow knitted slightly in criticism, adjusting a few sheets of parchment in his hands before slipping them into his desk drawer.

((Dear Mullroy: You are so screwed.))

Mullroy blinked for a moment, not understanding, but then a second of recognition came over his face before, he turned his gaze to the floor. "Um....no, sir." he stated. "I voiced my disapproval at an inappropriate time, sir."

"Well, it looks as though you've some measure of common sense, at any rate."

Was that a hint of vague amusement in his Lordship's eye? It was difficult to say, dry as his humor could be, and he pressed on as if nothing had altered in the slightest.

"It also appears that, however inept you might be at it, you seem to enjoy being the one to set things right, so to speak. I am not without understanding, Mullroy. You believe that you were doing us all a favor by subjecting your professional opinion on the matter, correct?"

"Only at the time, sir." Mullroy bit his lip, keeping his face turned towards the floor. "I didn't think, sir. It is not my place to say how things should be done sir. I'm sorry, sir."

Definately trying to worm our way out of this one. Oh yes we are.

Beckett couldn't have looked more smug. A little fear went a long way in putting these sorts in their place.

"It seems we are at an understanding as to why you are here, Mister Mullroy..."

He might have gone further, but at that moment, there was a swift and urgent knock at the door, before it swung open. Beckett frowned, annoyed at the intrusion. Then his annoyance melted away at the sight of Mercer striding in, some document clutched in his hand, the man's expression pleased indeed.

"What's the meaning of this, then, Mister Mercer?" Beckett inquired coolly. The man merely smirked and handed over the document...a letter, no less, from a Jonathan Groves. He though he recalled the name, but it wasn't important. What -was- important was the news within the letter.

...The ship seems to be floating out in the shallows by a small island...Lord only knows what Sparrow and Norrington and them could be doing on that island...

"Mercer, I want the addressee of this letter found and brought in for questioning." No hint of what was going on was given to poor Mullroy, who was for the moment ignored, in light of this new turn of events, Beckett's eyes alight.

How absolutely marvelous. The search for the Pearl hadn't turned out fruitless after all. And to think all it had taken were a few liberties with the mailing system.

Murtogg soon arrived near Beckett's office, recognizing the building in a heartbeat. Unfortunately there were guards near the front entrance, and some were even keeping watch on who passed the doorway to go inside. It was obvious he couldn't get by, even in a naval uniform; they'd question his reasons for being there...

He ended up circling around to one of the sides of the building and peering into the window, his back against the side of the place, James Bond-style. He noticed a military man inside pass by, not even giving a passing glance to the window, and continuing on into a room. Murtogg followed from outside, having a feeling in his gut that he may be going into Beckett's room...

Luckily, he was right. He glanced over his shoulder into the office, still against the back of the building so he wouldn't be seen.

There he was! Mullroy...that poor fellow...

He wanted to save him, but yet...it would be suicide, wouldn't it? It was in his best interest to watch for now...

(Yes! Beckett has teh letters! xD woohoo! *so excitednow w00t* ....Murtogg = James Bond. LOL))

Mullroy almost sighed with relief as Beckett's attention was deverted by Mercer. However, he frowned at the letters Beckett was handed, recognizing almost immediately that loose scrawl.

"Jonathan?" he asked, automatically, without thinking.

THAT drew Beckett's attention.

Both he and Mercer turned to look at Mullroy, Mercer's gaze cold and Beckett's calculating. "You know this man?" he inquired lightly, lifting the letters for the other to view...not closely enough to determine what, exactly, the letter -said-, but good enough.

This lump might prove useful to him after all.

Mullroy almost quailed under Mercer's cold stare, but forced his legs to keep him standing as he answered Beckett.

"Jonathan Groves, sir...he, ah, was a Leuitenant. We all thought he went down with the ship in the hurricane." he explained. "So...is he alive?"

Ah, yes, the hurricane. So he was one of James's men, no further along than a lieutenant, but obvious now of great value to them.

Beckett merely arched an eyebrow. "So it seems. He's managed to secure a ship and return to his former commander's side. Though if you're so concerned for his well-being...perhaps an excursion to loccate our missing comrades and return them to Port Royal might be in order."

Mullroy frowned. "Jonathan has managed to get a ship? All by himself?" Mullroy asked. "Oh...an excursion? Where are they now, sir?" All too eager for information, Mullroy had forgotten the minor detail that it was a bad idea to ask about details. Bad Mullroy.

"Perhaps not alone. All the more reason to find and assist them, is it not?"

That should have been a warning, that Beckett hadn't pinned Mullroy back by the ears for speaking out of turn. But it was too easy now to simply lead the other on.

"We know that Norrington was sighted on Tortuga. Perhaps Lt. Groves ended up there as well. It would be worth observing, and I think I know just who to send along to look for him, as you two already seem to be acquainted."

Yes. Send someone expendable to collect the information they needed. One of their ships would be too recognizable on that island of miscreants...this would take far more selective measures.

"You can take this opportunity to prove yourself to us, Mister Mullroy. I wouldn't be too hasty to put such an opportunity aside...not upon reflecting your current circumstances, at any rate."

Yes. There was his choice. To go and to serve on an important recovery mission (or so he would think) or to remain here under Beckett's shadow and continue on the way he had been.

He had not, but Beckett showed no sign either way, those cold eyes focused, the clockworks turning as he decided on the next course of action. This would be the easiest part.

"Very simple, Mister Mullroy...you and your fellow operatives will infiltrate Tortuga herself, appearing as like-minded rogues." He arched an eyebrow as he regarded Mullroy for that moment. "...shouldn't be too difficult. In any case, you'll be searching for any clue, any whisper or sign as to where these fine gentlemen have dissapeared to."

"You'll recieve the necessary information before your departure," he replied coolly, moving to the window now and gazing outside with an expression so cool it almost chilled the thick Caribbean air around them with its stare.

"Until then, Mister Mullroy, you are dismissed."

Mercer turned to look at him then, lips twitching upwards in the faintest of sneers. That was definitely a cue to get moving.

Mullroy hesitated for a fraction of a second, almost getting ready to ask another question, before he thought better of it, and quickly made his way out the door and into the hall. Once the outside doors closed behind him, he sighed with relief. Made it out unscathed.
