Mullroy heaved a heavy sigh. His coat was hot and sweaty, his britches were a mite too tight around the middle, and his head itched because of the damn foul wig he had to wear. Not to mention he was bored. Very, very bored. The chap he was paired with for guard duty was a tall, broadshouldered man. The strong, silent type. The strong, silent, nasty type. Especially nasty if you bothered him too much, which meant that, if you spoke to him, you bothered him too much.

Things had been alright before now...They had gotten quite a bit quieter after the Commodore (as Mullroy still thought of him as) left, but they'd managed. He had still been able to spend his guard duty time with Robert Murtogg, and it helped pass the time. Despite the fact that they always argued, Mullroy did have to admit that he thought of the other man as a pretty good friend. They had been through a lot together, from Jack Sparrow to undead pirates to a hurricane that nearly swallowed them both. However, when the East India Trading company, headed by that Lord Fuddyduddy or whatever his name was, he and Murtogg were split up and placed with different watch partenrs...

Mullroy didn't realize how distressing that would be until he found that, after a week of serious guard duty, he missed those chats with Murtogg during that period of time which was now filled with a heavy silence. In fact, he would even go so far as to admit that he missed the very man himself; that even during the times when they stood in silence, he was a comforting pressence. It was an odd comradrie, considering the amount of time they spent arguing over sea myths and the like, however...it was something that Mullroy only discovered he missed once it disappeared.

He heaved another heavy sigh, and the man next to him growled a warning, making Mullroy stand up straighter, swallowing in nervousness.

There was no way this day could possibly get any worse...

Estrella wondered around the dock, quietly musing to herself. She shouldn't have been there, she knew, and would probably get into a lot of trouble if she was caught, but years of practice had told her that as long as she looked like she was running an errand, no one would look twice at her. She was, after all, just a maid.

She sighed heavily. Just a maid. That pirticular reason was why Estrella liked to sneak to the dock when she found the time; usually only once a month, or less. She found the ships beautiful, and not just on their exterior. Inside, they held the promise of escape, of adventure. Mostly Estrella liked to do what she was told. Following orders was what she'd been bred to do, after all. Yet as she grew older, she wanted some recognition for her work, even just a pleasant thank you. Elizabeth had been kind to her, most of the time, but when Elizabeth gone...

Estrella sighed again and looked out to sea. Where could she have gone? She was proud of her master's daughter, for getting herself away from jail and danger, but worried about her too. It was likely she was currently in the company of pirates, and Estrella shivered at the thought.

She looked around at the people on the dock, most of them shiphands, some of them belonging to the King's Navy. Her heart fluttered at the sight of uniforms, but she ignored it, for she doubted any of them felt that way when they looked at her, if they noticed her at all. She was surprised to see many of the men looking angry. No one was misbehaving... it must have been Beckett's influence.

Fighting against the look of unease threatening to cross her face, she dismissed thoughts of Beckett and looked around again. She was concentrating so intently on not concentrating on her thoughts, she didn't even see what she tripped over when she found herself flying at the hard wooden dock.

Mullroy's eyes watched the young woman as she walked along the dock, and he peered at her curiously. If she didn't watch where she was going to--oop!

Mullroy lurched forward just as the young lady tripped, dropping his gun to the deck with a clatter to catch her before she hit the deck.

"Woah there, miss!" he said, as he set her on her feet. "You've got to be careful, there."

Estrella felt her cheeks burning as the stranger helped her up. On one hand, a redcoat was touching her. On the other, a redcoat was touching her, probably not a very good thing for her when she was sneaking about.

"Thank you!" she stammered. "I mean, yes, sir, I'll be more careful."

She turned to go before he could ask her any questions that would land her in trouble.

Mullroy blinked as she scampered away, and shrugged.

"Get back in line."

It was said low and deadly, and Mullroy froze, goosebumps crawling up his spine. Despite the fact that he was good sized, both in height and in weight, he was still a bit of a scardy cat. He swallowed, straightening slowly with his gun, about to step back into line when he realized something:

The other man was of lower rank.

His body snapped straight up with indignation and he turned an interesting shade of red, outrage coloring his entire being as he turned around and glared up at the other man, light blue eyes glaring up at him.

"Now you just look here!" he demanded. "I was just helping the young lady and there is nothin' wrong with that at alllll--!" He gasped the last word as he was hoisted into the air by his collar, and found himself looking down into the face of an angry sailor.

"ohdeari'msosorryididn'tmeanitpleaseputmedown!" Mullroy wailed, hands clutching at his collar, trying to loosten it.

Estrella hurried away and then stopped short.

'That's no way to treat a man in uniform!' she scolded herself. 'I should march back over there and thank him properly... and if he asks me what I'm doing, I'll simply say I was fetching something for my employer.'

She turned back around, ready to say something about how lucky Port Royal was to have such nice men watching out for them, but gasped loudly instead. A fierce looking solider was holding the one who had helped her off the ground by his collar!

"What's all this, then?"

The scene was being surveyed by one other person worthy of recognition, it seemed.

Beckett rarely set foot out here onto the docks, not unless he was intending to go somewhere directly, or waiting on important cargo. He disliked being around these saltier sea sorts, and disliked ships in general. But they'd yet to recieve any sort of news on the matter of greatest importance, and this was beginning to irk him.

A trip down to the docks, a quick word with his employees, might be the very thing to quicken the pace of their search.

Instead, he'd run across this little scuffle, and now those cold, calculating eyes rested on Mullroy, and the soldier threatening him.

A quick glance was shared with Mercer, who shadowed from not far behind, as always, and Beckett then turned his hardened gaze onto Estrella. Ah, someone's in trouble now...

"Is there a problem here that needs resolving, gentlemen?" the Lord inquired lightly, almost casually, though his gaze was anything but. "Or do you intend on leaving such confrontations for after your shift? I would hate to go through the trouble of adjusting your pay for the apparent lack of work going on down here."

Estrella trembled at the site of Lord Beckett, realizing he had spotted her too late to run.

She lifted her chin trying to meet his gaze but she failed, and lowered her eyes to the ground. She listened to him repremand the sailors, not daring to say anything in defense of the sailor who'd helped her. There was nothing for her to do but wait until Beckett turned his cool and calculating gaze upon her again, and to wait for the terrible punishment that undoubtedly lay before her.

Estrella shot a small, greatful smile and the handsome soldier, but she knew it would do no good. She hoped his comment wouldn't earn him ill.

Beckett merely lifted an eyebrow at the choking man. "I don't recall asking whose fault it was, Mister Mullroy. The end result remains the same...none of you are getting any actual work done."

A swift reprimanding look was given to the larger soldier, a jerk of his head indicating that, if he didn't want dimissal, punishment, or something equally as unpleasant, he should release Mullroy. Now.

The larger soldier frowned at Lord Beckett, a narrowing of the eyes. However, he did as was indicated and released Mullroy, who landed on the deck on his rear, coughing and sputtering. He coughed a couple times, rubbing his throat, before he got shakily to his feet. He swallowed harshly, the air he breathed coming in raspy breathes as he attempted to control his obvious fear.

Naval Officer Robert Murtogg: Smile As If Nothing's Wrong by t_mullroy

A soldier in red looked upon the docks and out to sea. He could see ships that had just left port be whisked away by the waves to some unknown destination. Sometimes he wished that he could do the same.

The silly job he had been given was the same as usual. "Guard the docks," the higher-ranked soldier would say, "and make sure no ships are stolen". And, as always, Murtogg would put on a fake smile and say, "Right away, sir!" But as soon as the other would leave, the smile would leave, and he'd be standing for hours.

But it wasn't like he was alone. Another soldier had been assigned to him, a tall, muscular man with a blank look on his face. He never really talked at all, and when Murtogg would tell him a story about how the days used to be before Beckett took control, the burly soldier would just nod without a word.

It was boring.

Murtogg sighed, standing there with his partner, watching a random ship leave port.

But soon enough, a group of people caught his eye. He squinted due to the sunlight to try to make out their faces.

Lord Beckett out and about? How unusual. He didn't usually see him much...but the man who had just stood up he found familiar.

Without thinking, Murtogg left his post without a word to his companion, who continued to zombily stand guard. He was scared, yes, but he hadn't seen his friend for such a long time...and why would he be conversing with Lord Beckett of all people?

Eventually he arrived on the scene, trying to contain his fear. In doing so it caused him to stutter slightly.

"M-Mullroy, it's so great to see you!" he grinned nervously, but it soon faded when he noticed Mullroy's condition. He looked like he had been greatly shaken. "A-Are you all right?"

He tried not to make any eye contact with Beckett, hoping this would turn out positively...although he had a feeling it wouldn't.

Estrella stared at the new soilder as he approched the one who'd originally helpe her.

'Mullroy,' she noted to herself.

The second man seemed to be a bit risky, coming up and ignoring Lord Beckett that way. She was almost awed by his nerve. He seemed to know Mullroy, perhaps they were friends.

After a quick glance out of the corner of her eye to verify the Lord wasn't looking, she gave a quick smile and curtsy to the new soilder.

(squee!)

"Yes, I'm fine, I just--" Mullroy blinked, the rest of his sentance falling from his mouth as he realized who he was talking to. "Murtogg!" he exclaimed, but immediately regretted it as the air ripped across his bruised throat, starting another coughing fit.
